WHERE

Gravesend can be found on the edge of the River Thames in the Borough of Gravesham, looking across the river to Tilbury. To the west lies Northfleet and Dartford, and the Medway towns are a short drive in a south easterly direction. Outlying villages include, Chalk, Higham, Shorne, Cobham, Meopham and Istead Rise. Gravesend has exceptional areas of outstanding beauty containing ancient woodland and a number of country parks including award winning Shorne Country Park.

GETTING AROUND

Gravesend town centre is just a five minute drive from the A2 connecting you with the Medway towns and the coast, as well as the M25 taking you into London.

Gravesend town centre, and nearby Ebbsfleet, offer high speed train services to London (taking around 20 minutes) that are ideal for commuters and city breaks. There are also trains from Gravesend to many central London stations, including, London Bridge, London Victoria, Cannon Street, Waterloo East and Charing Cross.

A SHORT HISTORY

Gravesend boasts a fascinating history. At St Georges Parish Church, in the centre of Gravesend town, you can see the monument and final resting place of Pocahontas, who died at Gravesend on a journey to Virginia in 1617. Charles Dickens is also associated with Gravesend and the surrounding villages. Although he died over 100 years ago many links between him and the Gravesham borough are still evident. He spent his honeymoon in Chalk, and lived and died in Higham.

Gravesend has an array of shops to enjoy, along with all the large supermarkets such as Sainsbury, ASDA, Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl. Gravesend Town centre has a busy high street and is encircled by a number of villages providing lots of variety. There are a lot of places to eat with varied cuisines from Fish & Chip shops, Curry Houses, Italians and Thai food.

Europe’s largest shopping centre, Bluewater is just 10 minutes’ drive away with over 300 brands and 50 bars and restaurants.

There are some highly regarded schools in the local area. Two Grammar schools (Mayfield Grammar School for girls and Gravesend Grammar School for boys) complimented by a choice of respected state and Private schools too.

Private schools include Bronte School, Cobham School for Girls and Gadds Hill independent school, set in the grounds of the former family home of Charles Dickens, in the village of Higham.
