Northfleet is a historic town located in the northwest corner of the county of Kent, England. Situated on the south bank of the Thames Estuary, it is part of the Gravesham Borough. Northfleet enjoys proximity to London, being just 20 miles east of the capital city, making it a convenient location for commuters.

WHERE

Northfleet can be found on the edge of the River Thames in the Borough of Gravesham, looking across the river to Tilbury. To the west lies Dartford, and the Medway towns are a short drive in a south easterly direction. Outlying villages include, Chalk, Higham, Shorne, Cobham, Meopham and Istead Rise.

GETTING AROUND

Northfleet is just a five-minute drive from the A2 connecting you with the Medway towns and the coast, as well as the M25 taking you into London.

Northfleet has its own train station offering various trains to the centre of London and surrounding areas. It is also close to Ebbsfleet International train station, offer high speed train services to London (taking around 20 minutes) that are ideal for commuters and city breaks.

A SHORT HISTORY

Northfleet has a rich history dating back centuries. Historically, Northfleet was known for its industrial activity, particularly in shipbuilding and cement production. The area played a significant role in the maritime and industrial development of the Thames Estuary.

Renowned author Charles Dickens lived in Northfleet for a brief period during his childhood. The town and its surroundings served as inspiration for some of his literary works. Although he died over 100 years ago many links between him and the Gravesham borough are still evident. He spent his honeymoon in Chalk and lived and died in Higham.

WHAT TO DO

History

Explore Northfleet's rich history by visiting landmarks such as the Church of St. Botolph, a Grade II listed building dating back to the 14th century.

Shopping

Northfleet has a variety of small shopping parades with smaller convenience stores, hairdressers, florists, barbers and salons offering beauty treatments.

The adjacent town of Gravesend has an array of shops to enjoy, along with all the large supermarkets such as Sainsbury, ASDA, Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl. Gravesend Town centre has a busy high street and is encircled by a number of villages providing lots of variety. There are a lot of places to eat with varied cuisines from Fish & Chip shops, Curry Houses, Italians and Thai food.

Europe’s largest shopping centre, Bluewater is just 10 minutes’ drive away with over 300 brands and 50 bars and restaurants.

For those pursuing higher education or vocational training, nearby institutions such as North West Kent College provide a range of courses and qualifications.

There are some highly regarded schools in the Gravesend nearby that include: Two Grammar schools (Mayfield Grammar School for girls and Gravesend Grammar School for boys) complimented by a choice of respected state and Private schools too.

Private schools include Bronte School, Cobham School for Girls and Gadds Hill independent school, set in the grounds of the former family home of Charles Dickens, in the village of Higham.
